Notes to the Boss

Need help getting off of work on Friday? Here are some ideas to help:

Option 1: The Honest Approach

Dear Boss,

I've decided to take this Friday, June 23, off from work, in honor of the 3rd annual International Day of Leisure. Yes, I know, Friday is normally a full workday, but I've determined it's time for me to add more leisure into my life. Thus, I'm going to start by taking a mental health day for myself, to relax, refresh, and rejuvenate my spirit. I work very hard for you all year, and I think I deserve a day of leisure from time to time. In fact, I know you work hard as well, perhaps you should consider taking the day off as well? In any event, have a great weekend and I'll see you back at the office on Monday.

Sincerely,

Joe Leisure

Option 2: Sudden Illness

Dear Boss,

I am not feeling well enough to go into work today. In fact, my doctor thinks it could be something serious (and contagious), and wants to run some tests. What tests, I'm not sure, but I'm sure they are serious. I'm sorry I won't be able to finish those reports I was working on, but I will get to them as soon as I am feeling better. If I could, I would attempt to do some work here at home today, but since I get dizzy just from sitting up, I think it's better I rest up so I can recover quickly and get right back to work next week. I will update you on my condition at the end of the weekend.

Sincerely,

Joe Leisure

Option 3: Family Emergency

Dear Boss,

I will not be able to go into work today, as have to fly out to see my grandmother, who is gravely ill. She has always been and inspiration to me, and I could not forgive myself if I wasn't able to be there for her and to see her one last time, should she pass away. I'm sure you understand the urgency of the situation. I will report back to you when I know more about her condition.

Sincerely,

Joe Leisure
